The awesome weekend

Friday: went to the A&P show with Lisa, Schmoo and Sophie, forgot my student ID making it cost twice the price, got hailed on . But sophie bought me candyfloss, a chocolate-covered apple and lent me her waterproof jacket. She is AWESOME. All in all it was still fun, and the animals were cute and there was a HUUUGE bull. That evening went to Marsden's party and got rascally drunk. Becca gave me and sophie a list back to mine, ta!
Saturday: woke up in time to sort myself out before James came over and we wandered over to the Dean's Bush market. Got loads of delicious things and fresh fruit and veggies. Came back to have fancy sausages and fancy bread and then fancy tart. Sophie and James performed white whirlwind on my house. A few other people came over and we played board games and tetris and charades and pictionary let off some fireworks which SHOT STRAIGHT AT US!

Sunday: Slept in, did excellent shopping,Schmoo made fishburgers using yummy sole from the market. Bought buckets, stakes, and 80 litres of potting mix from the warehouse and put a bunch of lettuce and tomato plants on the balcony. Went to mum and dad's for tea, helped mum discover trademe (she placed bids on a good dozen fancy tops) and planned a fun camping trip to the west coast at new year's.

So Schmoo and I went and saw Faintheart last night, it is a romantic comedy about a Scadian trying to win back his wife while staying at his trekkie friend's house. It was pretty awesome. They got all the Scadian/steelfighting stuff mostly right and it was funny and heartwarming and had a jerky PE teacher who got his comeuppance. Unfortunately there were only 4 other people in the theatre at teh Rialto so it probably won't be running very long.

I drove from my parent's house to my flat today! (this is exciting because I have only had 4 driving lessons so far.)

After the tutor giving everyone in math262 a big comiseration speech about how the assignment was very hard and most people only got about 50% and how it was impossible to get 100%, my friend Judith and I got 19/20. Hooray for teamwork and going to help sessions!

I got a chocolate bar in a maths lecture today, for pointing out a small error. The lecturer has to give out about 3 a lecture, I feel a bit sorry for him, but equally wrong notes are so very confusing! If only more lecturers had to part with chocolate bars when they were being sloppy, like the guy who told us that compasses point in the opposite direction to magnetic field lines, which is the exact opposite of the truth!

Desktop Meme
01. Anyone who wants to can post this meme and their current wallpaper at their LiveJournal.
02. Explain in five sentences why you're using that wallpaper!
03. Don't change your wallpaper before doing this! The point is to see what you had on!

This is my wallpaper. Sophie made it and put it on my computer while I wasn't watching. It is a fish. Blub.

It was a nice weekend, despite paying for it now. Friday Sophie and I went to aikido, where as per usual we were quite terrible but it was fun. Saturday was spent with my mum and dad, cos of more family tragedy that is just too depressing to go into. We went to the seedsavers seed swap though, which was really good. Last one we went to we had had nothing to bring, this time we had two kinds of beans and heirloom giant marrow seeds. We took home some bulbs (perrenial leek, chinese artichoke, and eqyptian walking onions) and some seeds (lots of beans, including haricot for baked beans!)
On saturday night was the party, got very drunk and embarrased myself multiple times. Also hurt my back! What an old man I am. Seriously, it was like agony to walk yesterday, a bit better today.
Hung out with Sophie on Sunday :) she is cool.

Anyway, good song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J-WpgOzW9A

Now, back to Relativistic mechanics.

It's so delicious and moist

I just made DELICIOUS CAKE.

It is a greek coconut lemon cake.

Ingredients

125 grams butter

1 cup sugar

4 eggs

2 cups desiccated coconut

1 cup self raising flour

Syrup

1&1/2 cups sugar

1 cup water

juice and grated rind of 2 lemons

Method

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, add eggs. Add coconut and flour - mix well and pour into a 20cm square tin or loaf tin lined with baking paper. Bake in preheated oven at 200°C for 10 minutes then reduce heat to 150°C and bake a further 30 minutes or until cooked through when tested with a skewer. Stand for 5 minutes in the tin then pour over the prepared syrup - cool completely in tin before removing.

Syrup: Place all ingredients in a small saucepan - bring to boil, stir until sugar has dissolved. Reduce heat to simmer 5 minutes - pour hot syrup over cake.

things that happened

I haven't posted for what seems lie forever, and last time was bad news so I better remedy that!

BTW thanks for all the supportive comments and hugs, it's nice to know you are all so lovely :)

Erm, missing Beast's flatwarming because I feel like going to bed and never getting up. I went to aikido last night, and oh MAN it HURT. You have to kneel the whole time (when you are not calculatedly falling over) and now my hamstrings hate me. This one guy did this thing to my hand that made me go from grabbing his wrist really hard to lying on the ground, and then showed me how! It's very cool and everyone is really nice and friendly and patient even though Sophie and I sucked so bad, and giggled a bit. I am going to go again next Friday and then EVERY MONDAY AND FRIDAY AND MAYBE WEDNESDAY until I rock!
Then we went home and drank beer.

Today I had to get up and go the aquarium with niece Bella, and help dad with his ENGR101 assignment. Teeheehee. Actually some of the modelling stuff was quite hard and made my brain hurt with the hangover-thinking.

That's it. Bed now.

My uncle was recently dignosed with bone cancer. Last night I wrote him a letter for my mother to take down south with her as she planned to go see him Thursday.
He died today though, so I guess I'll throw out the letter.
The funeral will probably be on Friday so I'll skip uni and go down to Gore for the weekend.

Holidays! I have done a bit of maths study today, but not very much at all. Nice things have been happening.
-We got a bucketfull of ecostore stuff from Meridian, it had the best liquid soap in it, which smells like fizzy lollies (or "rose and cardamom" if you read the label)
-Woot, Lisa and Peter's revel. Super cool.
-I was hungover and Schmoo cooked me breakfast! <3
-Sophie and Whitt came over for tea with a HUGE CHICKEN and we watched the Big Labouski, I dunno what I think but introducing yourself by swinging naked into a room, flicking paintbrushes is nothing short of classy.
-I just met the nearest neighbour who gave me kitchen stuff!

Drama! Fainting!

I got banned from giving blood today, cos I almost passed out AGAIN (this happened last time too.) But I saved my up to 3 people first! It was all very dramatic, and thanks to w00t and his leet nurse skills, and lisa and her leet car skills I got home ok, and feel a lot better after Schmoo's leet steak-cooking skills.

I was smart enough to do it after all my classes had finished this time, but still didn't get all the stuff I meant to done, cos of being woozy and unable to walk in the LCR. But it's not gonna happen again!

Not much else... flat is slowly getting there. We have a mop now.

So I guess I should make a post, since it's been a million years.
The new flat is really cool. We still have a lot of unpacking and (in schmoo's case) shifting to do, but we have the kitchen and bedroom functional. Sophie bought martini makings round last night, and Lisa, Becca and Whitt showed up. It was nice (even if we bored some of you with our raucous drinking and singing, sorry!) Today was pretty hard, I had a lab report due in and did not feel so flash. But I took part in a physc experiment, which was exciting! In a filling-out-a-form kid of way. I hope they are really testing my handwriting and liklihood to be a murderer or something.
We will have a flatwarming at some point, once we are sorted and have a free weekend...

That is all, I think. I miss my dog. But I have a Schmoo. Swings and roundabouts.

My room is almost empty, and I feel kinda odd. I start sleeping at Dallas St on Friday, which is my light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel for the weird sad feeling I have now.
My uncle Angus is in hospital after having internal bleeding due to his liver failing and it doesn't look like he will be around much longer, so this morning mum went down to Dunedin with her other brother to see him. Ironically today Angus's wife Rita died after many years of illness. Rita was awesome, so I feel kind of bad about that, but much worse for mum.

Schmoo and I have found a flat in which to sleep and eat fondue in. Photos here: http://misterschmoo.livejournal.com/109438.html

It's on Dallas St, which is super-close to the mall and riccarton bush and pretty close to uni, too. It is pretty big and has two bedrooms and a garage and a little balcony. Oh, and 70s decor in the photos, so apparently it is now to be known as "that 70s flat" though we are a bit small for having parties, we could have some drinkies and general fun times :)
We sign the lease and get the keys on Thursday, and move in Friday the week after (the 13th!)
It is all very exciting!

We went to the Kepp today and got blackberries and green tomatoes and mushrooms! I am going to make mushroom soup for tea!

Oh and, if anyone has a car and wants to help move stuff in either of the next two weekends in return for a slap-up feed, let us know!
Oh and, if anyone has any boxes from moving, let us know!

Elderflower cordial

makes about 5 cups

5 cups water
4 pounds granulated sugar
2 lemons
20 elderflower heads (pick when just open; give each a shake to get rid of any insects)
2.5 ounces citric acid

Boil water adn sugar until sugar is dissolved

Pare strips of peel off lemon, then slice the lemon. Place all in a large container with elderflowers.

Stir citric acid into the syrup, then pour this over the elderflowers and lemons. Cover and let sit overnight, then strain through cheesecloth or muslin into clean jars/bottles and refrigerate.

The result is a cloudy liquid with a sweet, citrus-floral taste.
Pretty fabulous, for three books where very little happens.
I particularly like the last line of this dialogue:

"I don't mind 'em a bit tousled," said he, and grinned raffishly at Miss Vyner, who was above all things, clean and neat, though she tended to smell rather like a neglected ash tray, because of smoking too much. "The business of grooming can be carried too far. For real attraction, a girls' clothes should have that lived-in look."
"I suppose you really like them dirty," said Mis Vyner.
"That's it. Dirty and full of divine mystery," said Cobbler, rolling his eyes and kissing his fingers. "Sheer connoisseurship, I confess, but I've always preferred a bit of ripened cheese to a scientifically packaged breakfast food."

CANTERBURY FAIRE IS SO WICKED-COOL!

There was BACON and a huuuge waterhole of fun with a slide and swinging ropes and perfect depth and temperature. There were classes about cheesemaking and bellydancing and I tried archery and drumming and spinning and I was bad at them all but I will get better by going to classes! I looked at everyone's pretty garb and I think I want to go Persian. I listened to the beautiful singing and want to learn how to be good enough to join in. I met lots of cool people and also people I already knew were cool, and I drank mead and cider and spiced wine and ginger beer and totally not-medieval creaming soda.

Very little was bad. Michelet having to do all this mong-stuff, (like packdown in the hot hot sun today) but he had to and I love him. Shaun the bastard collapsing and losing control of digestive functions at both ends in our campsite in the wee hours of this morning, that was uncool. What an arse.

But these are tiny blemishes on the SHINING green helm of CF. It was so wicked-cool!

less whingey entry

Went to Charlene's place last night and had her look upset at my scraps of cloth I pretend are awesome garb. But it's ok, it's all fixable I'm told, and not too shabby for first-time garb all in all. So yay, I win! I have a reasonably light week so hopefully I will get lots done tomorrow and weds, and even friday at Kepp. And of course, there's always hand-sewing at Faire. I'm sure the more cider I have the better it will be.

It was my niece's birthday on the weekend. I got her a lego rubbish truck and she loved it. Her mother who wants her to be a princess gave her a pink cellphone (for her 7th birthday! How does a 7 yr old need a cellphone?) which she played with a lot less than the truck. I win again!

The first five people that respond to this post will get something made by me. It will be about, or tailored to, those first five people who respond.

This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:
+ I make no guarantees that you will like what I make.
+ What I create will be just for you.
+ It'll be done this year.
+ You have no clue what it's going to be. It may be a mix tape. It may be fic, or a poem. I may draw or paint something. I might bake you something and mail it to you. Who knows? Not you, that's for sure!
+ I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.

The catch? Oh, the catch is that you have to put this in your journal as well!!

little update

I have almost three outfits for CF! Hopefully by the time it hits I will have four. That is about all I did this weekend - sew. It is about all I will do next weekend.
This week work is going on camp, with tents and rafts and other healthy outdoor fun. I leave Tuesday and get back Friday. It'll be good, but tiring. We have about 30 kids coming I think.

My brother and wife just went off to look after her mother, who is dying. She needs someone to give her pills and clean up the vomit. The best they can hope for is kidney failure, as this will mean she just sleeps more and more until she doesn't wake up. I'll go and see them on Tuesday.

I keep having dreams that I have cancer and have to tell people I have 6 months to live. So far I've had 3 dreams, where I told my parents, Sophie, and Schmoo & Jen & Andrew.

I am going to take this as a sign to have fun and love people.

PS You are cool! We should hug each other more.

Punch up at a wedding

The wedding went fabulously, all things considered! The actual wedding bit was dull and all about Jesus rather than my brother & sister in law, but the reception was cool. There was funk music and steak and cheesecake and lots of wine and beer. Everyone had a little bit too much to drink, even the old and responsible.
The speeches, which I thought were going to be the worst part, were quite nice (and more importantly, not too long!) My other brother was best man and did the obligitory embarrasing story about Jesse falling into the avon while trying to "tight rope walk" in "high spirits" as he so generously put it (not just drunkenly falling off a bridge.)
It was a bit tear-jerking at times, because my sister-in-law's mother is dying of cancer. She made it out of the hospital to get to the wedding, but went straight back after - not that you could tell hile she was celebrating, I can't believe how someone could be so strong. Poor young couple have to postpone the honeymoon.
